Early start. Bacon sandwiches. Incentive to attend. Tea. Coffee. Orange juice. Plates. Serviettes. Check watch. Fire Wardens arrive. Make for sandwiches. Sit. Chat. All in attendance. Begin. Powerpoint. Importance of updated Fire Policy. Statistics of work related fire death. Fire Warden responsibilities. Each assigned area to evacuate. Run through procedure. Inform there will be casualties. Don’t inform who casualties will be. Or where. Resistance to wearing of vests. Point out importance of vests. Need to be visible. Need to be visibly in control. Point taken. Jokes about fashion. Not funny. Serious responsibility. Decamp from meeting room. Walk fire escape routes. Walk 130 feet to fire assembly point. Reassess area for suitability. Explain reason for location. Dismiss Fire Wardens. Confident in abilities.

Covertly meet with Casualties. Blind. Pregnant. Broken leg. Dead. Explain in detail remit. Lots of laughter. Not funny serious responsibility. Essential for allocated personnel to know what to do in emergency situation. Casualties debate who has hardest role. Blind asks if she can have a dog. Respond accordingly. Pregnant asks if I think she is fat. Respond accordingly. Broken leg asks which leg. Respond accordingly. Dead asks what he died of. Don’t respond. Just stare. Uncomfortable. Dismiss Casualties. Not confident in abilities.
